Working with CLIL - principles and practices for successful learning
In this session I will explore the dynamics of CLIL especially how an integrated approach has progressed beyond addressing issues of content and language into providing contexts for deeper learning and pluriliteracies development. I will address fundamental issues associated with the design of classroom learning in order to work towards spaces and places where students become confident learners, where they are challenged yet empowered to use their language for meaning-making and knowledge construction. I will draw on work carried out by teachers across Europe.

Do Coyle is Professor in Language Education and Classroom Pedagogies in the School of Education, University of Edinburgh. Previously at the Universities of Nottingham and Aberdeen, for over three decades she has been working with teachers and learners to develop shared understanding for integrated pedagogies, especially CLIL. She has carried out extensive research in classrooms and published her findings for academics and professionals. More recently, she is a core member of the Graz Group which is working constantly with teachers and teacher educators to develop a PluriLiteracies model for teaching for learning. Above all Do believes that language is our greatest learning (and teaching!) tool and that all learners can experience deeper learning given challenging yet supportive contexts.
